Residents and colleagues at Astley View Care Home in Chorley recently came together to celebrate their love of reading during a special book-themed week of activities.
The home’s library became a lively social space as residents gathered to revisit some of their favourite childhood stories. Many enjoyed reading together in the spring sunshine, sharing memories of the books that shaped their younger years and reflecting on how storytelling played an important role in everyday life.

Conversations also turned to the writers behind the stories. Residents discussed the challenges faced by early female authors, including Beatrix Potter, reflecting on how remarkable it was for women of that era to have their work published and widely celebrated.
For some residents, the conversations sparked memories of childhood before televisions were common in the home. Books, storytelling and imagination were central to daily life, something residents enjoyed reminiscing about as they shared favourite characters, passages and stories.

The celebrations ended on a high note with a book-themed fancy dress competition. Residents and staff embraced the occasion with creative costumes, with ‘Grandma’ taking the top prize and the ‘Queen of Hearts’ named as runner-up.
The afternoon finished with a lively game of book-themed charades and a sing-along, bringing everyone together for a joyful end to the week and highlighting the importance of meaningful activities in care homes.
Christina Durnan, Registered Manager at Astley View Care Home, said:
“Reading has a wonderful way of bringing people together and sparking memories. It was lovely to see residents sharing stories from their childhood and enjoying time together in our library. The fancy dress competition and charades brought plenty of laughter, and it was a great reminder of how important simple shared activities can be in creating a sense of community.”
