When the record player comes out, it brings a lot of joy to our residents at Astley View Care Home. Everyone has their favourites, and residents choose the records they want to hear. As the music starts, familiar songs fill the room, people sing along, the words come back and, before long, some are up dancing while others join in from their seats.
There is no set agenda. The music plays and the afternoon takes its own course. You can see how much those familiar tunes bring back – smiles, recognition and a sense of ease.
Music is part of everyday life in our care homes, particularly for residents living with dementia. Being able to choose what they listen to makes it feel personal, relaxed and enjoyable.
These afternoons reflect how we approach residential and dementia care at Evermore Care Homes – listening, following people’s lead and creating a place where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.
