Astley View Residents Look Back on History Through Art and Song to Mark D-Day Anniversary

Poppies, wartime songs and shared memories were at the heart of a special D-Day commemoration event at Astley View Care Home in Chorley.

Residents spent time talking about the significance of D-Day, sharing memories and family stories as they took part in activities inspired by the occasion. Some created poppies, paper aeroplanes, doves and watercolour paintings, while others enjoyed spending time outdoors, taking in the colourful poppies in bloom and a beautiful butterfly sculpture in a nearby park.

Alongside the activities, residents enjoyed Victoria sponge cake and scones with jam and cream while music from the 1940s played in the background. The afternoon also included a performance from vocalist Anna the Golden Songbird, who had residents singing along to wartime favourites including The White Cliffs of DoverBoogie Woogie Bugle Boy and We’ll Meet Again.

Christina Durnan, Home Manager at Astley View, said:

“Days like this are about much more than the activities themselves. They give people the chance to share memories, talk about their experiences and reflect on moments that have shaped their lives. It was lovely to see residents sharing stories, spending time together and remembering an important moment in our history.”
