Choosing a favourite treat, picking up a few essentials or simply having a browse are everyday things that many of us take for granted. Residents at Astley View Care Home in Chorley can now enjoy these familiar experiences without leaving the home, following the opening of their own corner shop.
Residents, families and colleagues helped to shape the new shop, sharing ideas about what it should stock and preparing it for opening day. Its shelves now offer a selection of everyday essentials, toiletries and treats, with residents able to choose what they would like for themselves.
The corner shop was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by residents, relatives and colleagues. Singer Louis then entertained everyone as the celebrations continued.
Supporting choice and independence
Open every day between 2pm and 4pm, the shop gives residents the freedom to browse and make their own purchases. It is also a sociable place where people can stop for a chat and see what is new on the shelves.
Christina Durnan, Home Manager at Astley View, said:
“Having a shop within the home gives residents more choice and allows them to continue doing something that has always been part of everyday life. Residents have been involved from the beginning, and it was lovely to see them browsing the shelves and enjoying the opening with their families.”
Any profit from the shop will be added to the residents’ fund, helping to pay for trips, activities equipment and other items chosen by residents.
The corner shop is another way residents can influence life at Astley View Care Home in Chorley and make decisions about the things that matter to them.
