Residents at Astley View Care Home in Chorley have been arranging flowers in vintage teacups, creating beautiful displays and sharing skills they have enjoyed using over the years.
Several residents had previously decorated churches with flowers, so the session was a chance to return to a familiar pastime. The teacups provided a different setting for their arrangements, with residents choosing flowers and placing the stems to make the most of their colours and shapes.
During the activity, one resident helped another with her arrangement, showing her where to position the stems for greater impact. It was a lovely moment of one person passing on her knowledge and helping someone else try something new.

Activities like this give residents the chance to draw on their experience and interests. For those who had arranged church flowers, there was pleasure in using those skills again. For others, it was an opportunity to learn alongside someone with experience.
At Astley View, we take time to find out what residents have enjoyed throughout their lives and include these interests in our activities. Flower arranging brought creativity, conversation and time together, with the finished teacup displays reflecting each person’s choices.
