Residents at Ashton Manor Care Home in Lancaster have been sharing stories about their working lives, families and the experiences that shaped who they are.
During a recent reminiscence activity, residents talked about the jobs they once did, the people they worked with and the changes they have seen over the years. They also held boards showing their former roles, offering an insight into the many different lives and careers represented within the home.
Celebrating every resident’s life story
Moving into a care home is a significant change, both for residents and for the people closest to them. At Ashton Manor, getting to know each resident’s life story is an important part of helping them settle in and making everyday life familiar, interesting and enjoyable.
Joanne Tyson, Registered Manager at Ashton Manor Care Home, said: “When someone moves into Ashton Manor, we want to know who they are, what matters to them and what they have enjoyed throughout their life.
“Every resident brings their own stories, experiences and achievements with them. Taking the time to listen helps us understand the person and find ways to make their days meaningful and enjoyable.”

For residents living with memory loss or dementia, talking about familiar people, places and experiences can help them reconnect with important parts of their past.
These conversations can also mean a great deal to families. They offer an opportunity to share stories, look through photographs and learn something new about their loved one’s life.
Joanne added: “The move into a care home can feel difficult at first, and families often carry a great deal of responsibility before that decision is made. Once their loved one is settled and supported, they can spend more quality time together as husbands, wives, sons, daughters, grandchildren and friends.
“Our role is to provide the care and reassurance residents need while celebrating the life they have lived and helping them continue to enjoy life today.”
