Returning to Derian House Children’s Hospice was a particularly meaningful occasion for one resident living at Astley View Care Home in Chorley
A long-time monthly supporter of the charity, they were delighted to revisit a place that has remained close to their heart for many years. Derian House provides specialist care for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, while also supporting families across the North West.
The visit was arranged after colleagues at Astley View Care Home learnt about the resident’s long-standing connection with the charity. Joined by another resident and our team, they spent the afternoon exploring Derian House’s beautiful gardens.
It was also an opportunity to spend time with the dedicated team at Derian House, meet some of the families supported by the hospice and say hello to Teddy, the therapy dog, who proved to be a popular companion during the visit.
The afternoon reflected something that is important to everyone at Astley View Care Home. Moving into a care home does not change the person someone is or the things that have shaped their life. Charities they have supported, places that hold special memories, lifelong interests and personal connections all remain part of their story.
Taking the time to understand those stories helps us provide care that is personal in the truest sense. Sometimes that means supporting someone to continue a favourite hobby, revisit a place that is important to them or reconnect with a cause they have cared about for many years. These experiences help people maintain their sense of identity and continue living a life that reflects who they are.
We would like to thank everyone at Derian House Children’s Hospice for their warm welcome and kindness. It was a memorable afternoon for everyone involved and a reminder that understanding someone’s life beyond their care needs can make all the difference.
