Residents at Astley View Care Home in Chorley recently welcomed children from Strawberry Fields Nursery as part of the home’s Little Links programme, which brings together residents with local nurseries and schools through regular intergenerational activities that support wellbeing and strengthen community connections.
Residents and children spent time reading stories together, chatting about their favourite books, playing games and enjoying each other’s company. The visit finished with an ice lolly for everyone before the children returned to nursery.
Little Links is an important part of life at Astley View Care Home. By creating opportunities for residents to spend time with younger generations, the programme encourages conversation, stimulates memories and brings a lot of joy into the home. For children, it provides an opportunity to build confidence, develop friendships with older people and gain a positive understanding of later life.
Research continues to show the value of intergenerational activities in care homes, with regular visits helping to improve wellbeing, encourage social interaction and create meaningful experiences for people of all ages. Building strong relationships with local schools and nurseries also helps ensure the care home remains connected to the wider Chorley community.
