Joan & Tommy Celebrate 70 Years of Marriage at Ashton Manor Care Home – With Royal Congratulations

At Ashton Manor Care Home in Lancaster, we were honoured to celebrate a truly special milestone for two of our lovely residents, Joan and Tommy, as they marked their 70th wedding anniversary – with a wonderful celebration and a card from King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Their story began decades ago at a local dance class, followed by a first date at the Floral Hall. Since then, they have shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and of course, dancing.

On their wedding day, Joan wore a beautiful white dress and Tommy his Boys’ Brigade uniform. “It was a sunny day, just like our anniversary,” Joan remembered. “Later on, I cut up my dress to make dolls’ clothes for the kids!” Their honeymoon included a surprise win for Joan in a beauty contest – a moment the couple still chuckle about.

To mark their platinum anniversary, our team at Ashton Manor Care Home hosted a joyful celebration complete with music, dancing, decorations, and a homemade cake. “The staff really did their best,” Joan said. “It was lovely.”

Joan and Tommy offered a little advice to younger couples too: “You’ve got to have give and take,” said Tommy.
“Stick at it. You’re going to have hard times, but don’t give up too quickly,” added Joan.

Reflecting on their life together, Joan said: I loved to see Tommy smile.”
“And I loved seeing her laugh,” Tommy replied with a grin.

They were joined on the day by family, fellow residents, and our staff team – all proud to honour such an inspiring couple.

At Astley View Care Home in Chorley, we know that great care starts with a great team.

This week, during Glad to Care Week and Care Home Open Week, we wanted to make sure our staff and healthcare colleagues felt truly appreciated.

Residents joined in by helping to make up goodie bags, which were shared with team members across the home. We also arranged a free hairstyling session, and residents enjoyed having their nails done at the same time – adding a little pampering to the celebrations.

We feel incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated, compassionate team. Their kindness and commitment are what make Astley View such a special place to live and work.

If you’re looking for a care home in Chorley where people genuinely care – about their work, their colleagues, and the people they support – we’d love to show you around Astley View Care Home.

Ashton Manor Care Home in Lancaster and Astley View Care Home in Chorley regularly host walking groups for residents to enjoy the fresh air, nature and gentle exercise. These trails have become a popular part of the weekly activity schedule.

Led by our team, residents enjoy relaxed strolls that offer light physical activity and the chance to take in the beautiful local surroundings. These walks are a lovely way to stay active and connect with like-minded residents while enjoying the outdoors.

Our walking group is something residents look forward to every week – a calm, friendly opportunity to enjoy movement, nature and each other’s company.

A family member recently shared the positive impact it has had on their loved one at Ashton Manor:

I just want to pass on my heartfelt thanks for the afternoon walks activity – it’s made a big difference to my mum. It really lifts her mood, and the fresh air and company make her feel so much happier. A very big thank you from us, her family and on behalf of Mum. It’s a really great addition to your activity programme.”

We are delighted to announce that we’re taking part in Care Home Open Week, 2025.

This is our chance, along with care homes up and down the country, to showcase what we do. It’ll put us at the heart of the community as we open our doors and welcome old friends and new to meet us all.

Care Home Open Week runs from 16th to 22nd June. In that week, we’re looking forward to enjoying the following activities.

You are very welcome to come and join us:

  • Guided tours of our modern, purpose-built homes
  • A full programme of activities and entertainment
  • Complimentary tea, coffee and cake
  • Opportunities to meet residents  and speak with our care teams

We think it’s going to be great fun and will enrich our lives as we prepare for and then host Care Home Open Week.

We hope it’ll shed a light into our wonderful home – as the community meets residents, friends and families to discover the warmth of our home and the quality of living here. Who knows, some might even be inspired to think about a career in care – it’s so rewarding!

Last year, Care Home Open Week was a major success with over 5,000 care homes across the country taking part. Thousands of activities and events were held across the country.
